The city of Delft is upgrading the Schoemakersstraat, one of its main arterials. Part of this upgrade is the reconstruction of the intersection at Booijstraat / Stieltjesweg. In collaboration with engineering company Gebiedsmanagers I made the conceptual design, and the preliminary design for a new roundabout. 

In this design I started out with a basic protected intersection, but then focussed at optimizing several important aspects. Firstly I balanced the future traffic flow and driving speed on the roundabout versus the space needed, by increasing and limiting the roundabout radii. Then, I increased traffic safety and traffic flow for bicyclists by customizing the crossings. Thirdly, I made use of the existing trees and added new green planter areas where possible, to make the roundabout as climate proof as possible.
