Trees and vegetation can make a substantial contribution to air quality in the city and along roads. To gain insight in the functionality and design application of green along a road, an urban street design book is being compiled as part of the Flemish Dutch ‘Interreg’-project 'Applications of Functional Green' (Toepassingen Functioneel Groen). The municipality of Roosendaal, the Netherlands, selected the Laan van Brabant for this research. This is a busy urban arterial in Roosendaal. Together with urban designers from Urban Synergy I researched the opportunities and possibilities for placing trees, shrubs and other vegetation along this road and designed various options for the road. In addition to improving air quality, we designed the green verges and boulevards in such a way that the road regained a strong identity.
