Client: City of Amsterdam
Type of project: Conceptual Design, Preliminary Design
Build: 2022
My role: Senior designer public space
The Kerkstraat is one of the longest streets in the monumental city center of Amsterdam. With a limited width of 10 to 12 meters and a large and continuous presence of cyclists, pedestrians, car traffic, tourists, residents and entrepreneurs, it is also one of the busiest streets. Due to regular maintenance, city wide ambitions for a more car-free center and the ambition to enhance the bicycle quality on this main bike route, a retrofit is necessary.
Hired by the City as a designer of public space, I made a new design from building line to building, for the entire street length. I did this in a participatory deisgn process, with many (16) stakeholder workshops which led, through co-creation, to a widely supported design.
Careful considerations were made between the monumental aspects of the street and the future ambitions for a bicycle street, between car parking and bicycle parking, between walking space and sidewalk greening. The project was characterized by its design 'to the final centimeter'. The project was completed in 2022.
