Client: City of Maassluis
Type of Project: Conceptual design, Preliminary Design
Year: 2020
The Kwartellaan in Maassluis (the Netherlands) is an arterial road with high car speeds and no bicycle facilities at all. The road is also the missing bicycle connection between the train station and the metropolitan bicycle route to Rotterdam. The traffic safety on this street is mediocre, crossability is bad. In a team with Engineering Company Gebiedsmanagers, I redesigned the road as a complete street; a design speed of 40 km/h, curb separated bicycle infrastructure (4,0 m wide) and raised pedestrian cross walks with a center median. The design was made rainproof by adding a wide green boulevard, which functioned as a stormwater basin.
