The village of Zwaagwesteinde, in Frisia, the Netherlands, is being divided by larger 50 km/h distributor roads. The new arterial looping around the outskirts of the village creates opportunities for downgrading the center street network, as through traffic is now being diverted. Dick van Veen has, while working at Mobycon, redesigned all of these former through routes in the village. The Shared Space Knowledge Center has collaborated in this. At the crossroad of all distributors I designed a square, which serves as a gathering place for the village. It is designed as an open, flush space with colorized street pavers. A tree island in the space creates guiding for vehicles, while safeguarding pedestrians who desire a safe space. The village’ center has been restored.
