Client: Municipality of Oud-Beijerland, the Netherlands
Type of project: Conceptual Design, Preliminary Design, Final Design
Build: 2014
Done while in service of Mobycon, in collaboration with engineering company Nebest B.V.
The busy collector route Bierkade/Scheepmakershaven once formed the quay of the small harbor of the town of Oud-Beijerland, south of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Over time, this route has continued to grow and expand due to ever increasing car volumes, while still running straight through the town center. Spatial quality decreased, economical activities moved away. I redesigned this complete corridor, restoring this place to its former human scale. I brought back the quay, and redesigned two bigger intersections and parking areas as open squares, where ‘cars cross over’ instead of people. A treelined promenade running up to the main square provides options for activities like local free markets or the casual stroll. Traffic in this ‘shared space’ is relatively calm. Cyclists share the space with cars, while even in the squares pedestrians are not confined to sidewalk. The design was built in 2013-2014.
