Client: MRDH, municipalities of Delft, Pijnacker-Nootdorp, Lansingerland and Rotterdam, the Netherlands
Type of project: Route connection study, conceptual design
Year: 2019-2020.
The Rotterdam-The Hague Metropolitan region aims at stimulating bicycle use. Several long distance bicycle routes have been selected as the backbone of the metropolitan bicycle network, which might ultimately compete with shorter distance car commutes. I worked as the lead designer and project leader, in a team with Mobycon, Urban Synergy and IPV Delft, on the connection study and conceptual design for the route from Delft to Rotterdam Alexander. This 20 km long route runs from the centre of Delft through the open polder landscape of Pijnacker and Berkel to suburban Rotterdam Alexander. Besides the necessary mobility aspects, the study emphasized the delicate relationship with the surrounding landscape, as the route passed through 5 different landscape types. Besides that, highway A13 was crossed with an overpass which doubled as an ecological connection for smaller animals.
