The Dutch “Woonerf” receives worldwide attention. And rightly so; what is just any other ordinary street for many Dutch people, is something very unique special for the rest of the world; a traffic-safe, child-oriented dreamworld. Recently I was interviewed by Lindsey Struman of the Bike Talk podcast, a radio program hosted by bicycle advocates, which is broadcasted on Valleyfree Radio (Massachusetts) and KPFK radio (Southern California). I explained how the Dutch traffic system has a layered build up on the network level, with woonerfs as the lowest, most finely meshed level. And I explained what the enormous gains are which are within reach with this special type of street, both for the quality of life and the overall traffic safety. The interview can be listened to here, starting from the 48th minute.
